At Royal Medical Centers (RMC), optimal health is the foundation for improving quality of life. Delivering these services at scale requires a secure, reliable, and efficient digital infrastructure capable of supporting patient engagement and sensitive healthcare data.

RMC had already been operating on AWS to support its patient-facing systems and internal workloads. However, as the environment evolved, the organization faced increasing challenges in maintaining efficiency, visibility, and governance across its cloud infrastructure. Over-provisioned and underutilized resources—including compute instances, storage volumes, and virtual desktop environments—were contributing to rising monthly costs without delivering proportional value.

In addition, several unused and legacy components, such as idle infrastructure services and orphaned storage artifacts, continued to generate unnecessary charges. Workloads running on services like Amazon WorkSpaces were not aligned with the appropriate pricing models, further increasing operational costs. At the same time, the absence of structured cost allocation and tagging made it difficult to track spending across departments and identify key cost drivers.

From a security and compliance perspective, gaps in logging, monitoring, and governance limited RMC’s ability to maintain consistent controls across its environment. These challenges increased the risk of non-compliance with PCI requirements and required additional operational effort to manage and monitor the infrastructure effectively.

The combination of inefficient resource utilization, limited visibility into cloud spending, and growing operational overhead made it difficult for RMC to scale its AWS environment efficiently. With monthly cloud costs reaching approximately $8,000, the organization needed a more structured approach to optimize its infrastructure, improve governance, and reduce unnecessary spend.

To address these challenges, RMC evaluated how its AWS environment could be restructured to improve security, enhance compliance readiness, and establish a more cost-efficient and well-governed cloud foundation. This led to a focused initiative to modernize its cloud operations and align infrastructure with business needs.

Working closely with OneData, a trusted AWS Partner, RMC began implementing a structured approach to strengthen its cloud foundation, improve operational control, and drive better cost efficiency across its AWS environment.

Solution | Achieving 35% Cost Reduction and Strengthening Security on AWS

As part of its cloud optimization initiative, Royal Medical Centers (RMC) worked closely with OneData, a trusted AWS Partner, to transform its AWS environment into a more secure, compliant, and cost-efficient platform. The engagement focused on optimizing workloads supporting patient-facing systems and internal healthcare operations while maintaining uninterrupted service delivery.

OneData began with a detailed assessment of RMC’s AWS infrastructure, identifying inefficiencies in resource utilization and gaps in security controls. Several unused and legacy components—including an AWS Transfer Family FTP server, Redis ElastiCache cluster, idle LightSail instances, and orphaned Amazon EBS snapshots—were identified as contributors to unnecessary cloud spend. These resources were systematically decommissioned after ensuring data integrity and backup requirements.

In addition, redundant and unused services, such as inactive AWS Lambda functions and API Gateways, were removed to simplify the environment and reduce operational overhead. This resource rationalization significantly improved infrastructure efficiency while eliminating avoidable costs.

To further optimize cost efficiency, OneData re-evaluated the usage patterns of Amazon WorkSpaces and identified a misalignment in the billing model. WorkSpaces instances that were continuously in use were migrated from AutoStop (hourly billing) to Always On (monthly pricing), resulting in a substantial reduction in cost—up to 85% savings for those workloads.

To improve visibility and financial governance, cost allocation tagging was implemented across environments, enabling RMC to track spending by users and departments. Tools such as AWS Cost Explorer and AWS CloudWatch were used to monitor usage patterns, analyze cost drivers, and establish ongoing optimization practices.

Security improvements were implemented alongside cost optimization efforts. OneData leveraged AWS-native security services, including Amazon GuardDuty, AWS Security Hub, Amazon Macie, and Amazon Inspector, to strengthen threat detection and monitoring capabilities. Exposed services, such as publicly accessible FTP and Redis components, were secured or removed to reduce risk and eliminate unnecessary compute and network usage.

Enhancements in logging and monitoring were also introduced to improve visibility across the AWS environment. By enabling centralized logging and expanding monitoring coverage, RMC gained better control over its infrastructure and the ability to proactively prevent future cost drift.

All optimizations were carried out in a controlled and phased manner, ensuring zero downtime during the transition, allowing RMC to continue delivering uninterrupted healthcare services while modernizing its cloud environment.

Through this comprehensive approach combining resource rationalization, billing optimization, security enhancements, and governance improvements, RMC successfully transformed its AWS environment into a more efficient, secure, and scalable cloud platform.
