About the Customer

HireOne is an AI-powered recruitment platform designed to help organizations screen candidates faster and more consistently.

The platform combines AI-powered phone screening with intelligent candidate evaluation capabilities to automate repetitive recruitment activities. HireOne enables employers to conduct structured first-round interviews, capture candidate responses, and provide recruiters with the information required to make informed shortlisting decisions.

As hiring volumes increased, HireOne required a scalable and production-ready candidate-screening solution capable of conducting contextual interviews while maintaining consistency, auditability, and operational control.

Overview

HireOne identified the need to improve the speed, consistency, and scalability of first-round candidate screening.

Manual phone screening required recruiters to spend significant time conducting similar interviews for every applicant. The structure, questions, and quality of each interview could also vary depending on the recruiter, making candidate evaluations difficult to standardize.

Traditional interactive voice response systems could automate fixed questions but could not dynamically adapt interviews based on a job description, candidate resume, or free-form response.

HireOne also required a reliable way to record, transcribe, and preserve candidate conversations for recruiter review and fair-hiring governance.

To address these requirements, HireOne partnered with OneData to implement an autonomous candidate-screening solution using Amazon Connect, Amazon Lex, Amazon Bedrock Agents, AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon EKS, and Amazon Connect Contact Lens.

The resulting solution conducts job-specific candidate interviews, interprets responses, stores structured screening results, and provides recruiters with an auditable record of every conversation.

Opportunity | Improving Candidate Screening Consistency, Scalability, and Auditability

As HireOne expanded its AI-powered recruitment capabilities, the company needed a more scalable approach to first-round candidate screening.

Manual phone screening created a direct dependency on recruiter availability. Every candidate required a recruiter to schedule, conduct, and document an initial interview, making it difficult to manage increasing application volumes efficiently.

Interview consistency was another challenge. Questions and follow-up conversations could vary between recruiters, resulting in different screening experiences and potentially inconsistent candidate evaluations.

HireOne required interviews to be relevant to the specific role and candidate. A fixed questionnaire could not use the job description and candidate resume as context or adapt the conversation based on free-form answers.

The company also needed a dependable audit trail for each interview. Without recorded and transcribed conversations, recruiters had limited ability to revisit candidate answers, compare responses, or maintain structured evidence supporting screening decisions.

The AI screening capability also required a controlled deployment process. Updates to interview logic and conversational behavior needed to be tested and validated before being released into the production environment.

These requirements highlighted the need for an autonomous screening architecture capable of personalizing interviews, maintaining consistency, capturing structured evidence, and supporting continuous AI improvement through controlled releases.

Solution | Implementing Autonomous Candidate Screening with Amazon Connect and Amazon Bedrock

To address these challenges, OneData implemented an autonomous outbound candidate-screening solution on a dedicated Amazon Connect instance.

Amazon Connect places outbound calls to candidates and manages the voice interaction through Amazon Lex. This enables candidates to participate in a natural voice conversation instead of responding only to a fixed set of predefined options.

Amazon API Gateway connects the conversational workflow to a custom Amazon Bedrock Agent, which functions as the reasoning and orchestration layer of the AI interviewer.

The Amazon Bedrock Agent manages the interview conversation, generates contextual questions, and interprets candidate answers. An action group powered by AWS Lambda retrieves the relevant job description and candidate resume from Amazon S3.

Using this information, the AI agent generates interview questions tailored to the specific role and candidate. This allows HireOne to conduct relevant interviews without relying on the same generic questionnaire for every applicant.

Structured interview results are stored in Amazon DynamoDB, providing recruiters with organized screening information for subsequent review and evaluation.

Amazon Connect Contact Lens records and transcribes every candidate interview. The recordings and transcripts create a reviewable history of the conversation, improving screening transparency and supporting fair-hiring audit requirements.

The HireOne application runs on Amazon EKS with PostgreSQL supporting application data and Grafana providing operational observability.

Separate Integration, QA, and production environments were established to isolate development, testing, and live operations. Versioned Amazon Bedrock Agent aliases allow changes to the AI interviewer to be tested and validated before being promoted into production.

By combining Amazon Connect, Amazon Lex, Amazon API Gateway, Amazon Bedrock Agents, AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Connect Contact Lens, and Amazon EKS, OneData created a unified candidate-screening architecture that integrates outbound communication, conversational AI, contextual question generation, structured data capture, and operational monitoring.

Outcome | Improving Screening Automation, Recruiter Productivity, and Hiring Governance
