VesselLog Strengthens Maritime Security Operations and DevOps Governance on AWS with OneData

Learn how VesselLog, developed for Sedna Global, partnered with OneData to transform a cloud-hosted maritime security application into a fully governed, DevOps-mature platform using infrastructure automation, continuous security monitoring, operational runbooks, and AWS-native governance controls. The platform reached full production maturity in January 2025 and is actively supporting maritime security operations.

Benefits

Centralized vessel and visitor management across maritime operations

Improved application availability through automated scaling and health monitoring

Reduced mean time to recovery (MTTR) through structured operational runbooks

Eliminated configuration drift through infrastructure-as-code governance

Strengthened backup and recovery readiness through validated AWS Backup procedures

Improved security visibility through continuous threat detection and centralized finding management

•Enhanced deployment reliability through immutable infrastructure and controlled rollback mechanisms

About the Customer

VesselLog, developed for Sedna Global, is a cloud-based maritime security and vessel management platform that enables real-time vessel tracking, visitor management, and check-in/check-out security workflows across maritime fleets. The platform replaces manual visitor logs and fragmented vessel-specific security systems with a centralized solution that improves visitor tracking accuracy, security governance, and operational consistency across maritime operations.

Deployment Status

VesselLog completed its transition to a fully governed, DevOps-mature production environment in January 2025. The platform is actively supporting live maritime security operations for Sedna Global, with all infrastructure, monitoring, backup governance, and security controls running in production across development, staging, and production AWS environments.

Overview

Sedna Global initially engaged OneData to build VesselLog as a Software-as-a-Service platform on AWS, aligned with AWS security best practices and validated through a Foundational Technical Review (FTR) process.

As the platform expanded to support production maritime operations, the organization recognized the need to mature beyond basic cloud deployment and establish a structured operational framework capable of supporting reliability, security governance, incident response, and operational consistency across multiple environments.

To support these objectives, OneData implemented a DevOps governance model built on infrastructure automation, operational runbooks, monitoring, backup governance, and continuous security controls. This governance framework reached production readiness in January 2025.

Opportunity | Advancing Operational Maturity for Maritime Security Operations

The initial VesselLog deployment successfully modernized visitor management and vessel security workflows by replacing manual processes with a centralized cloud-based platform.

However, as adoption increased across maritime operations, several operational and governance challenges emerged.

Infrastructure provisioning lacked standardized automation across development, staging, and production environments, increasing the risk of configuration drift and limiting the ability to consistently reproduce environments during testing, troubleshooting, or recovery activities.

Operational response procedures were largely reactive and undocumented. Infrastructure events such as compute failures, API service disruptions, database issues, or storage-access problems required manual intervention, resulting in inconsistent recovery processes and unpredictable restoration timelines.

Backup and recovery governance also required improvement to ensure operational continuity. Security monitoring capabilities were fragmented across the environment, limiting visibility into potential threats, unauthorized activities, and critical findings requiring investigation and remediation.

Solution | Implementing a DevOps Governance Framework on AWS

To address these challenges, OneData implemented a comprehensive DevOps governance framework across dedicated AWS environments supporting development, staging, and production operations. All components described below are running in production as of January 2025.

All infrastructure resources were brought under Terraform management, with Amazon S3 used for remote state storage and Amazon DynamoDB providing state-locking capabilities. This approach established version-controlled, auditable infrastructure deployments and eliminated configuration drift across environments.

The compute layer was enhanced using Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling Groups configured with predefined scaling thresholds and Amazon CloudWatch monitoring. Application traffic was managed through an Application Load Balancer (ALB) integrated with Amazon Route 53, while AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) was used to manage HTTPS certificates and secure external access to the platform.

The platform’s serverless components were enhanced through AWS Lambda alias-based release management and Amazon API Gateway integration, enabling controlled deployment rollouts and simplified rollback procedures during application-related incidents.

Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL continued to serve as the platform’s primary data layer, supporting vessel management, visitor tracking, and operational workflows. Amazon S3 Object Versioning was enabled to protect critical documents and operational records, allowing recovery from accidental deletions.

AWS Backup was implemented with scheduled backup plans, recovery point validation, and documented recovery procedures. Security governance was enhanced using Amazon GuardDuty for continuous threat detection, AWS Security Hub for centralized security finding management, and AWS CloudTrail for API activity logging and audit visibility.

OneData also developed a comprehensive operational runbook covering incident response procedures, maintenance workflows, validation activities, and operational approvals, with structured operational evidence captured and retained to support KPI reporting and ongoing service governance.

Outcome | Delivering a Governed and Scalable Maritime Security Platform

Following the January 2025 production go-live, VesselLog achieved significant improvements in operational governance, infrastructure reliability, deployment consistency, and security visibility.
